This morning I looked at the headlines on a newspaper website. I read them and thought, where’s the good news? I didn’t want to click on any of the headlines to read more doom and gloom. I understand that we need to be informed about what’s happening in the world. But like many others I’ve had my fill of negativity.
Just as we don’t hear about all the miraculous happenings with the earth, so we don’t hear about all the miraculous acts of loving kindness around us. If I were forced back onto a core belief, it would be that belief in loving kindness. I see examples of it every day. On Facebook and everywhere I go in my local reality.
Acts of kindness, often from one stranger to another. A door held open for a mum struggling with a pram; a bus driver waits for a passenger running to catch the bus; a smile from a child that lights up a whole bus full of people.
Our individual days are stitched together by small acts. Small pieces of loving kindness offered or received and often we dismiss them as nothing. But steadily accepted or given, they weave the tapestry of our lives. Slowly heal situations that face us with challenge. And tip us over from the negative to the positive.
I often visualise the world with a network of lights. Start where I am and draw a line of light between me and others. Then imagine their connections. Soon the picture is full of light. Yes darkness remains between the lines but the light predominates. That loving kindness is everywhere because we’re hard wired to connect.
From all indications this year will prove as turbulent and challenging as last year. We’ll survive it together and I pray move closer to that tipping point of loving kindness being the greater force in the world.
