It was on such morning that I had my magical encounter with a heron. In the park which belongs to the university, they created a millennium garden in 2000 containing fountains, sculptures and of course plants. At that time in the morning it’s usually empty of people; later it’s a short cut from the hotel on the edge of the park to the university buildings.
That morning I had the garden to myself and sat watching the water cascades. Then from behind a sculpture appeared the heron. I sat still not wanting to disturb it. I needn’t have worried because for half an hour the bird picked its way around the edge of the pool with delicate placements of its feet. The heron focused on finding those tiny insects; I focused on its beauty.
In that space and time I found peace. Forgot the worries that nagged at me. Accepted the present as the gift it was.
As I left, I made a bow of thanks to the heron, now on the opposite side of the pool and still focused on its present moment.
