Erica Tucci had a full life as a corporate manager of a Fortune 500 company, a healing arts business owner and an author of three books. It all came to a screeching halt in June 2011 when she had a stroke that left her completely paralyzed on her right side. While spending more than two years in recovery, she gained much wisdom about what's really important in life. She re-entered the world with a new mission: to use her story as an inspiration for others facing life challenges, which we all have, big or small. That story can be found in her brand new book, Radiant Survivor. Erica is also an official Online Ambassador for the American Stroke Association.
Yesterday, Erica visited Paula Tarrant at http://inspiredwomenwork.com/when-bad-things-happen-to-good-people, where they talked about her recovery process, her mind-set and her life before and after her stroke.
Today, I'd like to share with you a recent interview I had with Erica when I got to ask her some questions on truth, surrendering and believing. I hope you enjoy it.
Eileen Parr: Where do you feel it in your body when you know it's the Truth as opposed to our Own Truth?
Erica Tucci: Interesting question. I wrote a blog post called “Are You Coming from Your Mind or Your Heart”, which is how I define our own Truth vs Absolute Truth. What I feel is that our own Truth is based on the needs of our ego, which is concerned more with our “outer reality,” thus, our own truth comes from our head or mind; it is our “perception” of things. But Absolute Truth comes from our soul or heart, where we are connected to the source of all creation (God, Spirit, our Creator, Allah, or whatever you call the Higher Power). So, when something resonates in my heart, I feel it is a Divine message, an absolute Truth as opposed to our perceived truth, which I see as an “intellectual exercise” of the mind. Understand, though, that this is my belief about what Truth is, and as human beings, do we really know what Absolute Truth is?
Eileen Parr: What actions do you take to surrender in the moment?
Erica Tucci: Another interesting question because the stretch of my healing that I have been going through since April of this year is about surrender; but more about surrendering and “letting go and letting God,” which really is a way of saying surrendering to the moment since the “here and now” is all that we truly have. The past is gone and the future hasn’t happened yet. I realized the only way I was going to heal completely from my stroke is to move out of the masculine, ego-based mindset of being overly driven by goals of the future and trying to control everything in my life, my “outer reality.” I needed to shift to a more submissive, feminine consciousness where I am nurturing my soul, and having the faith that “the power that created my body can heal my body.” To get to this place of communion with my Higher Self and to be able to live in the present at all times, I have been using
· positive affirmations of how I AM right now,
· meditation that focuses on my mantra and keeps me in the present, allowing me to go to a deep level of consciousness, a state of Being instead of Doing, and
· creative visualizations of how I see myself fully healed NOW.
In between the hours spent on my book project or any other work at hand, I also try to take time outside to enjoy nature, listening to the birds, watching the squirrels and lizards scamper around, soaking in the sun, etc. And at night time, when my “monkey mind” wakes me up and starts chattering about what I should be doing, I use Reiki on my head and think about how I need to be sleeping at that moment instead of worrying about the future, and I usually fall back to sleep. Wonderful technique! Plus, I have spent time resting and relaxing, whether it’s a nap, reading books or sometimes watching TV. It is critical to find some time of each day to take time for yourself and practice being in the “here and now,” even if it’s only for 20 minutes a day. Hopefully, you’ll be able to eventually infuse your day-to-day activities with that mindful practice so that you are always living in the present moment. I am still working on it myself.
Eileen Parr: What is an effective way to believe in yourself when surrounded by negativity?
Erica Tucci: As I said in my previous answers, I have been shifting from an ego-based mindset that is focused on our outer reality to a more heart-centric consciousness that comes from within, from our true essence, where we radiate self-love. To get to this state of loving yourself, be truthful to yourself. Acknowledge all your feelings, negative and positive, and know it’s OK to feel them all. Just embrace them with love and ask them be your allies, not your adversaries. Spend time growing spiritually and nurturing yourself: mind, body and soul. Take time for yourself and enjoy the beauty in yourself and all around you. Have gratitude for the person you are and everything you have. When you are in this glorious state of loving who you are, any negativity that surrounds you seems to just fall away, as people and outer circumstances begin to feel your shining light and can’t help but be affected by it. So, as one of my mantras says “Believe in yourself and watch the miracle unfold.”
