A year with Hafiz - translations by Daniel Ladinksky
William Dalrymple - From the Holy Mountain
Christina Lamb - The sewing circles of Herat
Susan Hill - The soul of discretion
Carl Jung, Memories, dreams and reflections
Jacqueline Winspear, Among the mad
Some of those titles are an attempt to understand the current situation in the Middle East and beyond. What's caused it and how it's likely to develop.
The Jung is my first real attempt to understand his theories, particular with reference to the creation of mandalas which I've been doing for the past few weeks.
The novels, coincidentally are about getting into the mindsets of people, very different and very disturbed for different reasons.
This year I've begun to try to hold paradoxes. The holding of two opposing views which according to Buddhist theory each have an importance and a similar value.
I'm only a few days into this practice but it's a challenge.
PS - I can thoroughly recommend all the authors, even Jung whom I'm finding hard going. The William Dalrymple is the third of his I've read and he makes difficult situations easier to understand.
